The Arts of IS25
All incoming sixth grade students will have the opportunity for an
interview/audition  Prior dance training is not required for admission but an
interest in movement and performance is a must. Our program provides
students with detailed instruction in a variety of dance techniques including
modern, jazz, and ballet.  Students will perform basic dance movements in each
of these styles as well as apply correct dance terminology.  Students will also
learn various cultural and social dances these dances and develop an
understanding of its contribution to past and present day society.  In addition to
the instruction of the styles listed above students will study and analyze major
dance works and artists.  They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of
the choreographic principles, processes, and structures used in their own
movement ideas.  During the school year students will have the opportunity to
perform in various school concerts.  Performance is major component of the IS
25 dance program and is a requirement for all students.  Through the art of
performance students can demonstrate their knowledge, display their talent,
and showcase their hard work. The IS 25 dance program provides well-rounded
instruction that adheres to the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.
Our goal is to provide students with a life long appreciation for the art of dance.
We hope that through our program students will gain confidence and a sense of
accomplishment, which will remain with them throughout their lives.
Band  Mr. Copell
IS 25 offers a three-year band program for grades six through eight.   All
students will have the opportunity to come to IS 25 with their elementary school
during the spring term so that they may request and be interviewed for band. No
experience playing a musical instrument or singing is required to join the band,
however students who do have experience are usually placed in the same
beginning band class by grade.  Whereas all students selected for beginning
band classes learn the same basic skills, the pace of instruction for the more
experienced students is faster. Instruments taught in band class are flute,
clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto/tenor/baritone), trumpet, trombone,
baritone horn, tuba, bass guitar, drums, percussion, bells and xylophone.  Piano
and guitar are not part of the regular curriculum but there are some
opportunities for students who play those instruments to perform with the band
and small ensembles. Once a student is selected for the band on a preliminary
basis, parental consent is required. Parental involvement in their child’s music
education is important.  Students will need to make a three year commitment to
band participation.  Once a child in admitted into the band with parental consent
each child has the opportunity to participate in this professional training course
in learning to play an instrument and performing in ensembles large and small.
Concert performances are required of all students. Some rehearsals may be
scheduled in addition to the usual band class periods during the day. All
students are expected to participate in all rehearsals. In addition to the regular
instruction during the school day, students who are not otherwise mandated
may volunteer to participate in band class during the extended day period
Monday through Thursday until 3:02 PM. Students in this smaller ensemble play
music that is not performed by the regular band classes and emphasizes blues
and jazz including improvisation. The IS25 Band program is affiliated with The
Academy—A Program of Carnegie Hall, The Julliard School and The Weill Music
Institute and the Queens College Jazz Project. These programs bring other
professional musicians and teaching artists into the classroom to work directly
with the band. The IS25 Band offers the middle school student the opportunity
to learn to play a musical instrument and explore her or his musical talent while
learning to take personal responsibility for the success of the group. Our goal is
for all students to explore and develop their musical potential while sparking a
lifetime of music appreciation.

SING, SING,SING!
The Vocal group at IS 25 is a 3 year program which starts in grade 6 and
continues through grade 8.  We teach the children not only how to sing but how
to utilize all parts of their bodies.  From Classical to Rap, Rock and Hip-Hop, all
genres all music are added to the vocalists repertoire.  A “Good Feeling” comes
from expressing themselves with the enthusiasm of performing for others and
“Feeling Good” about themselves.
